Alison Gruen, MD

Dr. Alison Brett Gruen was born in New York City and raised in Scarsdale, NY.  She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1996 with a B.A. in the department of History. In addition to her premed studies, she was the starting right wing for the National Championship Princeton Women’s Rugby team in both 1995 and 1996.   

After college, Dr. Gruen attended the Yale School of Medicine from which she graduated with an MD degree in 2000.  Her thesis research was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.  

Dr. Gruen completed her medicine internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 2001 where she met and befriended Dr. Bobby Buka.  She completed her Dermatology Residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident.  She was awarded the King’s County Doctor’s Day award for compassion in medicine. At SUNY Downstate, Dr. Gruen trained under Alan Shalita, MD, a world expert in the field of acne vulgaris. She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors society at graduation.

Dr. Gruen has been practicing dermatology in Manhattan for 18 years and is thrilled to be a part of The Dermatology Specialists. She is committed to helping her patients feel confident in their skin.  

Dr. Alison Gruen currently lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where she is raising two daughters.  She secretly hopes one of them becomes a dermatologist.
