Juvéderm and hyaluronic acid fillers generally work beautifully for inner or medial tissue laxity (the bags underneath the eyes). Although, for bigger bags I usually use a targeted ultrasound called Ultherapy. I also refer to our in-house plastic surgeon for surgical reduction of under eye bags. But, for a little bit of flaccidity (loose skin on the inner portion of the under eye), hyaluronic acid fillers can be very helpful. Restylane and Juvéderm are the fillers that we most commonly use.
In regards to side effects, the most common is bruising at the injection site. This occurs if a small skin vessel is hit during injection. In other rare instances, the injector moves too far to the outside of the under eye trough. This has revealed reports of ophthalmic artery embolization – a very severe and vision-threatening side effect. We avoid this by staying within the inner aspect of the under eye sulcus. Another potential side effect in that area includes the migration of filler material. Filler migration can be reversed with hyaluronidase – an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid – should that occur.
In summary, Juvéderm, as a hyaluronic acid filler, will work for medial tissue laxity. The most common side effects of an injection is bruising.
