New Rochelle has a creative streak a mile wide. Here are five fun facts every resident should know about this vibrant city:
1. Silent Films, Loud Legacy
Before Hollywood stole the spotlight, New Rochelle was making movie magic. The Thanhouser Film Corporation produced over 1,000 silent films here in the 1910s—making it one of the earliest hubs of American cinema.
2. Rockwell Painted Here
Norman Rockwell lived and worked in New Rochelle from 1913 to 1939. He painted some of his most iconic Saturday Evening Post covers right above a dry cleaner on North Avenue. Proof that even legends start with humble studios (and probably a few strong cups of coffee).
3. Saturday Morning Roots
New Rochelle was home to Terrytoons Studio, where animators created Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and other Saturday morning classics. Decades before Pixar, this small studio entertained generations of children.
4. Big Band Breakthrough
In 1939, Glenn Miller and his orchestra landed a game-changing summer residency at Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle. Their nationally broadcast performances helped launch Miller into stardom and put the city on the swing music map.
5. The Coin With a Cow
In 1937, New Rochelle issued a special half-dollar featuring a well-fed calf—commemorating the town’s old custom of paying rent with livestock. It’s the only U.S. coin that celebrates a real estate transaction… via farm animal. Did New Rochelle create the first meme coin?
