If you have been suffering from acne, then you will want to see one of our board-certified dermatologists in New York City, Brooklyn, and Queens. While you are waiting for your appointment, you can use over-the-counter treatments. Below are some of the over-the-counter treatments that you can use:
Benzoyl Peroxide for acne– Benzoyl peroxide helps destroy the bacteria that causes the acne. It also helps unclog the pores and remove oil from the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is available in concentrations that range from 2.5 percent to 10 percent. If you have very sensitive skin, then you may want to use a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Keep in mind that this treatment may cause side effects, such as redness, dryness and burning. Neutrogena, Clearasil and Proactiv are some of the products that contain benzoyl peroxide.
Salicylic Acid for acne– Salicylic acid is found in many spot treatments and over-the-counter washes. Salicylic acid is available in strengths that range from 0.5 percent to two percent. It works by preventing the pores from becoming clogged. Clogged pores often lead to acne. Salicylic acid also helps break down blackheads and whiteheads. You may experience mild irritation and stinging if you use this treatment. Neutrogena, Noxzema and Stridex are some of the products that contain salicylic acid.
Sulfur for acne– Sulfur is an ingredient that helps remove excess oil and unclog pores. It also helps remove dead skin cells. Products that contain sulfur have a tendency to cause dryness. Clearasil, Glytone and Mario Badescu are some of the products that contain sulfur.
