Narrow Band Ultraviolet B (UVB) Treatment

Author: Dr. Bobby Buka

Introducing therapeutic ultraviolet light to New York City (NYC)! Although present in small amounts in natural sunlight, concentrated narrow-band ultraviolet B light (NB-UVB) is an exceptional treatment for psoriasis, eczema, and a number of inflammatory conditions of the skin. Within our New York and Williamsburg dermatology practices, we offer this unique NB-UVB therapy to rapid, safe efficacy. NB-UVB slows the overactive growth of affected skin cells. Treatment is usually 2-3x weekly, for just minutes each session, and works to quickly quiet local inflammation with NO systemic side effects, all within the comfort and privacy of our certified, dermatologic exam rooms. Best of all, this therapy is covered by most insurance companies.

NYC UVB Treatment for Vitiligo, Psoriasis, and More

There are two types of UVB treatment, broad band and narrow band. The major difference between them is that narrow band UVB light bulbs release a smaller range of ultraviolet light. Our NB-UVB is a safer therapy, without increasing the incidence of skin cancer.  Several studies indicate that narrow-band UVB clears psoriasis faster and produces longer remissions than broad-band UVB. It may also require fewer treatments per week than broad-band UVB.

While undergoing treatment in our New York offices, the skin may redden and itch from exposure to the UVB light. UVB can be combined with other topical and/or systemic agents to enhance efficacy, as these therapies work synergistically.
