Scars Treated with CO2 Laser

Author: Dr. Bobby Buka

What Is A Fractional Laser?
A fractional laser uses pulses to treat tiny areas of a patient’s skin. By focusing so narrowly, it leaves the surrounding skin undamaged. Fraxel CO2 uses tiny columns of laser that penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate the body to produce its own collagen. This allows the skin to heal faster than it would even with the use of traditional lasers use for skin resurfacing.

What Scars Can Be Treated With Fractional Laser?
Fractional lasers can be used for various kinds of scars. Every area of a patient’s body can benefit from Fraxel CO2 treatment.

Can Fraxel Be Used On Darker Skin?
Unlike traditional resurfacing lasers, Fraxel CO2 is safe to use on the skin of African Americans and other dark-skinned people because it targets water, not melanin, which is the substance that gives skin its color.

What Should a Patient Expect During A Visit?
The patient will have a consultation, then the treatment will be performed in the offices of Bobby Buka, MD. Before the treatment, the patient’s skin will be cleaned and the area to be treated will be numbed by a topical anesthetic. The anesthetic will be removed after about an hour and the treatment will start. Fraxel treatment usually takes between 10 minutes and a half an hour. The length of the treatment depends on the size of the patient’s scar. The discomfort during the procedure is minimal and the treated area may be swollen and red for a few days.

How Much Does CO2 Treatment Cost?
Depending on how large the scar is, the cost can range between $1000 and $3000.

How Many Treatments Are Needed to Treat the Scar?
Most scars need 1, sometimes two, session(s). If you do need a 2nd session, it should take place 6 months later.
