Valley Stream: Where Long Island Quiet Meets Unexpected Cool
Tucked just outside the city hustle, Valley Stream serves up classic suburban charm with a few surprises baked in. From quirky street names to celebrity cameos, this neighborhood has more personality than you might expect. Here are a few fun facts every resident should know:
1. From “Skunks Misery” to Valley Stream
Before it was Valley Stream, different corners of the neighborhood had some questionable branding. The northeast section was known as “Skunks Misery” thanks to a pungent fertilizer plant that let the whole town know when the wind changed. Meanwhile, “Rum Junction” got its name from a lively cluster of taverns along Rockaway Avenue. Thankfully, cooler heads (and noses) prevailed, and “Valley Stream” was born—named for the area’s winding brook and natural valleys.
2. Hometown of the Unexpectedly Famous
Valley Stream quietly raised a powerhouse lineup of future stars: Steve Buscemi, Fred Armisen, Jim Breuer, and Cyndi Lauper all called it home. And while they were unlikely to have shared a stage, they may well have shared a booth at Mitchell’s Restaurant—the local institution serving up pancakes and diner wisdom since 1938. It’s the kind of place where a punk rocker, a mob movie icon, an SNL comic, and a headbanging stand-up could sit down for breakfast and no one would bat an eye.
