If, above all else, you want a product that’s as gentle as can be, you should choose an unscented formula. Dr. Bobby Buka, a leading dermatologist in New York City, was especially wary of synthetic fragrance, while Romanowski and dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine were more worried about essential oils. But either category has the potential to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. So for our sensitive-skin contenders, we skipped both, nixing products that included fragrance, parfum, or essential oil.
