Skin allergies affect millions of people, causing discomfort, itching, and unsightly rashes that can disrupt daily life. Whether triggered by environmental factors, certain foods, or even everyday items like jewelry, skin allergies require proper diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Beau DiCicco, TDS’s Chief Medical Officer, shares, “Rashes are notoriously tricky territory for those outside the skin-focused world of medicine —luckily, dermatologists are the detectives of the dermis. Patients come to us not just for answers but for the kind of experience-driven insight that leads to effective treatments. And more often than not, the cause isn’t what they expect.
That persistent eye rash? It might have nothing to do with your skincare routine —it could be your acrylic nails. There’s a misconception we won’t develop new allergies to products previously tolerated. That favorite perfume, well-loved moisturizer, or piece of jewelry you’ve worn for years? Unfortunately, any of them can suddenly become the culprit to your allergy.”

Skin allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances. This reaction leads to inflammation, resulting in symptoms like itching, redness, and rashes. Allergens can include environmental triggers (such as pollen or pet dander), irritants in skincare products, metals in jewelry, and even ingredients in sunblocks.
Skin Allergies are more common than you’d expect. For example, if you’re concerned about whether your favorite jewelry is irritating your skin, check out our article: Is Your Favorite Jewelry Damaging Your Skin?

At The Dermatology Specialists, we offer a variety of treatment options to manage skin allergies and alleviate symptoms.
Dr. Beau DiCicco explains, “Some of my patients are surprised to learn that blood allergy test results they may have received in the past don’t provide much insight into their potential skin allergies. For that, we require a completely different type of test, known as a ‘patch’ test.
However, even the patch test requires an experienced provider to administer properly. Additionally, medications that suppress the immune system, such as certain eczema treatments and oral steroids, can interfere with the results and lead to false negatives. False positives are also possible if the test is interpreted by someone without the proper training.”
Below, we further explain the benefits of various test options and why a dermatological medical provider is key in this process.
